Bolacha de Araruta – Bolacha Amanteigada, também conhecido como sequilho, a araruta é uma planta de rizoma fibroso, do qual se extrai um polvilho fino, extremamente branco, usado no preparo de biscoitos, bolos e
mingaus. O plantio da araruta é anual e feito no início das chuvas e a colheita pode ser feita 9 a
10 meses após o plantio quando as plantas apresentam um aspecto seco e amarelado.

A araruta é originária da América do Sul. De conhecimento dos indígenas, há indícios do
seu cultivo há mais de 7.000 anos. No Brasil, os Caraíbas e os Caiapos cultivavam inúmeras
variedades de marantáceas, em campos de floresta, nas margens das trilhas que ligavam uma
aldeia a outra. Essas roças representavam valiosos bancos destas culturas e de outras plantas
tuberosas, extraiam o amido da araruta e com ele engrossavam sopas usadas para tratar idosos
e crianças e para fortificar mulheres recém paridas.
